What Are Dermal Conditions?

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. As such, there are many common conditions that can affect the health and appearance of your skin.

Types of Skin Conditions

Dermatitis

There are several different kinds of dermatitis, including atopiccontact, and seborrheic. Atopic dermatitis appears as an eczematous rash that itches and burns. Contact dermatitis is an eczematous skin reaction that occurs when the skin comes into contact with an irritant or allergen. Seborrheic dermatitis, a scaling disorder of the face, ears, and scalp, develops when yeast begins to overgrow on the skin.

STDs and Scabies

STDs and fungal conditions can result in fairly common skin disorders and problems. Venereal warts (HPV), herpes simplex-2, and  herpes simplex-1 can result in unpleasant warts, requiring treatment by laser, surgical excision, or other removal techniques. Scabies is a highly contagious skin condition that causes itching and discomfort; treatment for scabies is easy, however, it requires a topical cream solution.

Rashes and Inflammation

Many skin conditions result in uncomfortable rashes or discoloration. Hives and shingles are two common skin conditions characterized by painful, burning, or itching rashes on various parts of the body.

Discoloration and Spots

Skin discoloration, eruptions, or spots can indicate several different skin issues, including various degrees of acnerosacea, or actinic keratosis. Acne, an extremely common skin disorder, can be treated and controlled with topical or oral medication. Rosacea, a disorder that causes unusual, extreme redness, flushing, and breakouts, cannot be treated; however, it can be controlled with medication and topical treatments. Actinic keratosis is a precancerous, sandpaper-like skin condition caused by sun damage. It is extremely important to monitor this condition and consult a dermatologist if lesions appear.

Psoriasis

Affecting two percent of the adult population, psoriasis is a disease in which the body produces more skin than it can eliminate. This results in lesions, abnormal nail growth, sores, and other conditions. A dermatologist can help devise a treatment plan to reduce conditions and identify triggers that can cause flare-ups.

Rashes, Fungus, and Warts

Sharing facilities, athletic equipment, and clothing can sometimes result in skin conditions such as sports rasheswarts, and nail fungus. These are commonly treated with medication and, occasionally, excision.
