What Are Blepharoplasty Eyelids?

As we age, the eyelid skin begins to stretch and the muscles and supporting structures around this area weaken. As a result, fat pads begin to protrude and swell. This causes our eyelids to take on a tired and “worn out” look with the appearance of wrinkles, “bags” and dark circles.

In addition to the cosmetic concerns noted above, in some instances, excess eyelid skin drooping may cause a functional impairment and reduce peripheral vision. Peripheral vision field testing is important to perform before proceeding with surgery. Blepharoplasty, also often called an eye lift or undereye bag surgery, can sometimes improve these visual field problems.

How It Works

Blepharoplasty in Newnan is utilized to repair sagging eyelid skin and correct unsightly fat pads. Depending on the nature of the issue, excess skin, redundant muscle, and bulging fat pads can be cosmetically corrected in order to restore a refreshed and more youthful appearance to the eyes. CO2 Laser can be used simultaneously with this procedure to remove unwanted skin growths and improve sun damaged skin.

FAQs

Is blepharoplasty covered by insurance?

At our office, we do not submit blepharoplasty procedures for insurance reimbursement. We would be happy to provide you with the information so that you may attempt to file yourself. Routine eyelid procedures are not insurance eligible.

The cost of an eyelid lift is impacted by the types of techniques required, the amount of time the surgery takes, and several other factors. Cost can be discussed during your initial appointment.

Can blepharoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Absolutely. Eyelid surgery can be simultaneously performed with other procedures such as CO2 laser resurfacing, Excel V™ Laser, RF micro-needling, thread-lifts, facelifts and cosmetic injectable procedures.

Will I be awake during the procedure?

“Sleepy” is a better term. We will prescribe you medicine to help you to relax and be comfortable. You will need someone to drive you to and from the appointment and stay with you for 24 hours.

Who is an ideal candidates for eyelid surgery?

  • Healthy individuals
  • Patients who do not take blood thinners
  • Nonsmokers
  • Those who have realistic expectations and a positive outlook
  • Individuals who have excellent eye health

What happens during an eye lift?

When all four of the patient’s eyelids are being rejuvenated, the upper eyelid surgery is performed first, followed by the lower eyelid surgery.

After anesthesia has been administered and has taken effect, a small incision is made. For upper blepharoplasty, the incision is made in the natural crease at the top of the lid. For lower blepharoplasty, the incision can be made either right below the lash line or inside the lid.

Dr. Harvey then adjusts the muscle, skin, and fatty tissue in the region as needed. Once the area is smooth and tight, the incisions are closed and dressed appropriately.

What is the recovery process like?

Once you return home after eyelid surgery, it will be time to rest and heal. For best results, make sure to follow Dr. Harvey’s post-surgical care instructions closely. This will minimized the chance of complications and will make recovery as comfortable as possible.

During the healing process, there will be light swelling and bruising in the area. These issues can be addressed with the help of cold compresses.

Patients must take time off from work to heal. Additionally, they will need to protect their eyes and eyelids. Wearing sunglasses helps to avoid wind, sun, and pollutants, and wearing sunscreen is vital. It is also necessary to keep the eyes moisturized using prescription eyedrops or artificial tears.

Once the recovery process is complete, patients will be able to see their full results. For a good idea of how your results might look, view blepharoplasty before and after photos.
