What Is Laser Hair Reduction?
The laser hair reduction procedure uses a specific wavelength of light to treat: unwanted dark hair (face, chin, legs, bikini, back), Pseudofolliculitis Barbae, and ingrown hair follicles.
Our laser hair reduction device is FDA approved for laser hair reduction. Its unique patented chill tip make the device very easy to use and helps to maximize patient comfort.
FAQs
What are the pre-op instructions for the laser hair reduction procedure?
Typically, we ask our patients to discontinue the use of retinoic acid products and glycolic acid products beginning 3 to 4 days before your treatment. In addition, we will sometimes prescribe an antiviral medication if the treatment is in an area where cold sores form. It is also wise to stay out of intense sunlight (or tanning beds) both 1 week prior and after your treatment.
How much discomfort can I expect from the treatment?
There is minimal, if any, discomfort with our Laser Hair Reduction procedure. A topical anesthetic is all that is used. This is applied for 30 to 60 minutes on the treatment area(s). Pain usually is described as a mild irritation, or stinging sensation which can be controlled with cool compresses, topical corticosteroids and medications such as ibuprofen.
How long does the skin stay inflamed?
The advanced technology of laser allows for the skin to recover quickly. There can be some minor redness and follicle inflammation immediately postop. This manifests as a “goose bump” appearance of the skin and quickly disappears within a matter of days. Sometimes one can develop crusting or hypopigmentation at the treatment site. These effects are rare and can persist for up to a few weeks.
What about post-op care?
It is important to stay out of intense sunlight for the week after your laser hair reduction treatment. Concealing makeup, e.g. Jane Iredale™, can be used to minimize redness.
How long will I see a benefit from laser hair reduction?
The benefits from the laser hair reduction procedure can last for several years. Repeat treatments are sometimes required but this is determined on a case by case basis. In our experience, patient satisfaction has been extremely high. One can also combine laser with medical therapies such as spironolactone or Vaniqa™ to optimize results.
